Watercolor Artists whose Paintings I Admire

Watercolor Artists Past and Present

Over the years I have found a number of watercolor artists whose work I quite admire, so I thought I would list some for you.

Joseph Mallord William Turner

A total master, even many of his oils had a watercolor look to them and his watercolor work was generations ahead of his time. A real inspiration for anyone trying to get that extra something out of their watercolor painting.

Joseph Zbukvic

Joseph paints with tremendous freedom, letting the water help him create beautiful atmospheric and mood filled effects. He has published an excellent book entitled ” Mastering Atmosphere & Mood in Watercolor” which unfortunately is out of print (and no you can’t have mine)!

His work is in great demand as are his workshops.

John Singer Sargent

What can I say, Sargent was a master and has no doubt been an inspiration of countless watercolor artists over the years. If you would like to see a collection of his watercolors the book “The Watercolors of John Singer Sargent” by Carl Little is good value.

Alex Powers

Alex Powers paints evocative watercolor paintings of people.  I have his book ” Painting People in Watercolor by Alex Powers” in my library and find it a great inspiration.

Alvaro Castagnet

Alvaro’s bold paintings are in great demand as are his workshops. His watercolors show you how you should not be afraid to use strong and bright colors when painting with watercolor.

I have his book “Watercolor Painting with Passion! by Alvaro Castagnet” in my library and found it to be useful, especially for more experienced artists.
